FWDF and SWF Habitat Trust Lands: reading the map

Understand the difference between FWDF map boundaries and SWF Habitat Trust reference locations, and what to verify before visiting.

Two labels, different evidence

FWDF stands for Fish and Wildlife Development Fund. SKHunter’s FWDF layer uses Saskatchewan’s published GIS land features, with additional information from the FWDF locations directory. A directory entry and a GIS feature are not necessarily a one-to-one match.

SWF stands for Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. Its Habitat Trust references are shown as a separate collection. Do not treat SWF Habitat Trust Lands and FWDF as interchangeable names, or assume that a nearby FWDF polygon establishes SWF ownership.

A point is not a property boundary

The SWF collection currently uses a partial set of public reference locations. These can help identify a site, but do not provide a complete SWF parcel inventory. Some are photo-monitoring reference points. They are not verified entrances or legal boundaries.

A land description or contextual boundary match can help you investigate a location. Check the evidence label in the selected record and follow the original source. Where an exact boundary is unavailable, the website should be used as a starting point for verification.

Access needs its own check

Read the entry conditions attached to the individual record and review the manager’s current information. Land categories alone do not establish hunting permission, vehicle access or an open season. No-hunting notices, posted conditions and site-specific restrictions matter.

Use the original FWDF locations directory, SWF Habitat Trust information and Saskatchewan hunting information linked below to confirm the details. Keep legal land descriptions and place names in their original English form when comparing records or contacting a land manager.

SWF Habitat Trust: membership and permission

For SWF-owned Habitat Trust land, SWF says access permission is on the membership card. Read its terms. Non-members must obtain written permission through SWF’s published process before visiting.

Observe posted exclusions and regulated seasons. Access is on foot; vehicles only retrieve legally killed big game. Outfitting, baiting, trail cameras and permanent tree stands are prohibited. This policy does not establish access to neighbouring private land or to every FWDF parcel administered by SWF. A property’s donation conditions may exclude hunting.

Match the exact property to your card terms or written approval. Keep an entrance, your intended activity and any site conditions together in your private trip record; recheck signs on arrival.
